[2022-03-21] Daughter Drifting to the East Coast – Ling Yu talks about her work Daughter

Poet Ling Yu (Mei-Ching Wang, 1952-), who was a teacher at Ilan University, launched a new poetry collection "Daughter". Continuing the style all along, she interweaved life, history and journey. This book jumped off the pageFor its candid presentation with the reality of family ethics, recollection of her mother’s decease, and demonstration of the survival struggles of women from multiple perspectives of "daughter", revealing the question and extrication of patriarchal thinking. Many of works in the poetry collection talk about medical care, personal pain, and at the end of life parting. These are all descriptions of family relationship and reflection on life and death.

The conclusion of "Daughter" is an extensional depiction of the masterpiece "The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido" by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), the Japanese ukiyo-e painter. Utagawa Hiroshige painted the scenery of the accommodation between Edo and Kyoto of Japan. There are both realism and fiction in the painting. Each scene can be watched closely, the tastes of life lie therein. As for ukiyo-e, the viewer can change the focal point of his gaze at will, choose the part to be scrutinized, or the viewers can imagine the waves of emotions and the touches of weathers in the paintings which wanders in the mysterious changes of life's long journey and time.

Mei-Ching Wang said, “Most of these works consist of human activities. People in the mountains and rivers, people at work, people in cities, people indoors. They live with enthusiasm, with quietness, hardship, or with joy. I love this kind of liveliness, this trace of human life, which has shortened the distance of time and space for thousands of years. "Fifty-three stations of the Tokaido " is the reason I am fond of Utagawa Hiroshige. I am immersed by my own fascination with Japanese long scrolls and its endless aftertastes.”

Nowadays Mei-Ching Wang has resigned her position as a teacher, , enjoying her time with total freedom time. She usually spends her time casually, without specific reads or thoughts about writing. “I don’t have plans, just feelings. Only when the feelings hit home that I would be able to compose.” For her, writing is a genuinely personal hobby, so she would rather persist in her ways than to discuss with others.
For years Mei-Ching Wang has been constantly writing stories about train, railways, station. Up till the east coast scenery in this new book, yet again the metaphor of "journey" has been unfolded. Take life as a journey, then sickness would be a necessary station. Mei-Ching Wang has always observed, pondered, and reflected on this long journey, identifying one by one the memory images forgotten by the clamor of the world, and writing down those who have long been cherished, and those who are sad and reluctant to part, with a sincere attitude to restore a true self, again and again. As she said: "I have to be my true self before I could see you".
